Collin Cheung Explains What’s New with the OriginOS 7

So, what’s actually new? In an exclusive conversation, Collin Cheung, OriginOS Global Product Planning Director, vivo Mobile Communication Co. Ltd shared how the new OriginOS 7 is tuned for Indian users, with features that smoothens everyday function while making content creation easier. Q. What did you refuse to compromise when building OriginOS 7? 

With OriginOS, one thing we definitely did not want to compromise was the user’s experience. For us, smoothness is more than fast responses and fluid animations. It also means making the phone, its apps, and the ecosystem work well together. 

That is why we put a lot of focus on improving Cross-Ecosystem Connectivity¹, introduced Origin Workbench² for multitasking, and added AI feature such as Jovi³. Our goal was to make everyday tasks easier, both on the smartphone and across the wider connected ecosystem. 

Q. What did you observe about how people use their smartphones today that fundamentally shaped the thinking behind OriginOS 7 and how can AI change the smartphone experience? 

Smartphones are now central to how people work, communicate, create, and organise their lives. Users move between apps, devices, and tasks throughout the day, so they expect technology to feel simple, connected, and personal. This shaped our focus on four areas: smooth performance, easy connectivity, useful AI, and personalisation. OriginOS 7 is designed to fit naturally into users’ routines rather than make them follow complicated steps.  

With AI in smartphones, we believe the usage should be practical, not decorative. It should quietly reduce effort in tasks users already perform while keeping them in control. With OriginOS 7, AI helps users capture, find and organise information. For instance, AI Recorder⁴ supports summaries, smart naming and multilingual transcription, including conversations that move between English and Hindi. Jovi³ can find information, read and distil content from files, support scheduled tasks and proactively deliver relevant results.

This experience is built on three principles: AI should be easy to access, its results should be useful and reviewable, and user security must remain protected. 

Q. If you had to describe the philosophy behind OriginOS 7 in one line, what would it be? 

For us, the idea of smoothness begins with understanding what truly matters to users. First impressions matter, and the new visual identity of the system truly shines right from the start. With its fluid motion and refined materials, the interface offers a fresh, personalized touch. As users dive deeper into using their phone, they’ll notice how natural everything feels, from smooth transitions to responsive interactions. Supporting third-party apps harmoniously blends into their daily experience. Plus, they’ll uncover handy tools like Origin Workbench² for task management and cross-device connectivity. AI feature like and Jovi³ provide everyday assistance, showcasing that the real value lies in how everything works together seamlessly over time. 

Q. What do you think users will stop doing once they’ve spent enough time with OriginOS 7? 

We designed OriginOS 7 to make everyday tasks feel simpler, so you can get things done without extra steps or interruptions. Origin Workbench², for example, brings up to five apps into one workspace, cutting down on constant app switching. With AI Cross-App Drag⁵, you can quickly extract, translate, and move information between apps. 

Office Kit⁶ makes it easier to access and share information across devices, while Jovi³ helps you read documents, find details, and create quick summaries with simple commands. Whether you’re on a smartphone or PC, these tools keep everyday workflows connected, efficient, and smooth. 

Q. When OriginOS 7 launches, what new standard do you want people to hold their smartphone experience? 

We believe a smartphone should not only be powerful; it should also fit naturally into everyday life. We want users to move smoothly between tasks, stay connected across devices, receive useful AI support, and make the experience feel personal.

Q. For OriginOS 7, what did “better” actually mean to your team? 

For our team, “better” meant going beyond surface-level upgrades and refining the entire end-to-end experience. Building on our learnings from OriginOS 6, we focused on consistent performance during multitasking and app switching across devices.  
We also made the experience more personal with customization options such as Wiggle⁷ and Pet Pals Themes⁸. At the same time, useful AI now supports everyday tasks, from turning screenshots into calendar events to creating quick summaries.  

In markets such as India, collaborative research helps us improve reliability across hardware and software. Ultimately, better means making advanced technology feel natural, polished, and dependable.
