Impact of Smartphones on Parent-Child Relationships

vivo believes in creating technology that brings families closer, and emphasises on the need for people to reduce their smartphone usage with their #SwitchOff initiative. We urge our audience to choose a #SwitchOff time and give more attention to their loved ones as unchecked screen time may irreversibly impact the time they spend with family. Let's try to #SwitchOff for our families and thus #LiveTheJoy of precious moments spent together.

Here’s your guide to maintain a healthy relationship with your smartphone

Regularly put your phone away during mealtimes with friends and family.
When we have our phones out during meals, we are telling the people we are with that we are not important to them. Every year as part of the Switch Off campaign, vivo invites users to spend an hour with their phones off, connecting with their loved ones. But you can do this on your own, too: choose at least one meal a week when you and your loved ones will all put away your phones.
Put a rubber band around your phone to help you notice when you are reaching for it.
We often reach for our phones on autopilot, only to look up 20 or 30 minutes later wondering where the time has gone. The first step in breaking this cycle is to notice when you have picked up your phone. To make this easier, put a rubber band or hair tie around your phone for the next few days. Then, when you pick up your phone and wonder, “Why is there a rubber band on it?”you’ll give yourself an opportunity to pause and ask if you really want to be on your phone in that moment.
Practice WWW: What for? Why now? What else?

Each time you notice yourself reaching for your phone, you ask yourself these questions.

“What for?” is an opportunity to ask what your purpose was in reaching for your phone (don’t be surprised to discover that you often don’t have a concrete purpose at all).

“Why now?” is an opportunity to figure out what contexts or states of mind cause you to reach for your phone. For example, are there any emotional states (e.g. loneliness, boredom, anxiety) that seem to trigger a desire to check your phone?

“What else?” is your opportunity to ask yourself if there is something you’d rather be doing than be on your phone (your sticky notes can help!).
